Meeting of the Civil Counseling Board on Cultural Heritage Protection

M.Kushnir, Director of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews together with N.Shevchenko, Deputy Director of the museum, attended a meeting of the Civil Counseling Board on Cultural Heritage Protection in Chernivtsi city on the 14th of September. A whole number of issues concerning architectural monuments' preservation were on the meeting's agenda. The reconstruction of the former Jewish hospital's building (which is now private property) on Barbussa Street (the former Synagogengasse) was one of the most discussed issues. The Civil Counseling Board decided on the necessity of improving the reconstruction plan in order to preserve the accurate authentic image of the building as it is an architectural monument.
While discussing this issue, the Director of the Museum suggested that in the next meeting, it should be considered to include all buildings of the so-called Jewish quarter of Chernivtsi as a complete architectural complex to the list of architectural monuments of local importance with the aim of their better preservation.
