It was a year of life, filled with success and failures, hopes and worries, joy and sometimes with sorrow. From the 1st till the 12th July 2012 an international volunteers' summer camp of the NGO ASF (the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace) was held in Chernivtsi. It's worth mentioning that the camp has already become traditional and traditionally it was supported by the Museum of the history and culture of the Bukovinian Jews.

It is celebrated on the occasion of the event which was the Rubicon in the history of Jewish people – exodus from Egypt slavery. A new educational project in the museum In April, 2012 the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews in a partnership with the Department of Education of the Chernivtsi City Council on the funds of a municipal grant has launched a new project – “Overcoming stereotypes together”. The project aims to promote the strengthening of the atmosphere of mutual understanding, respect and tolerance and at the same time to prevent possible outbreaks of xenophobia and interethnic hostility. Participants of the project (senior students of Chernivtsi high schools) will conduct certain research work during April – August 2012. In particular, they will learn about the influence of different ethnic groups for the development of the city in the past and they will get to know how the organized national lives of representatives of different ethnic communities in Chernivtsi look like today. The outcomes of the project will be represented in an exhibition that will be shown both in schools and galleries of the city. The display of Chernivtsi students will be enlarged by the exhibition “Together”, prepared by the Congress of National Communities of Ukraine (Kyiv) about lives of representatives of small national groups and ethnic communities in Ukraine. Honorable Guests in the Museum. On Saturday, the 24th of March the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews was honored to have special guests – Dr Hans-Juergen Heimsoeth, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Germany to Ukraine, and his wife. Undertaking an official visit to Chernivtsi, the Ambassador and his wife took a tour around the museum, showing true interest in its permanent exhibition, and met the museum’s team.

July 2011 Soldiers of the Ukrainian Army help volunteers of the German organization “Action Reconciliation Service for Peace” to clean the Jewish cemetery in Chernivtsi. On the 7th of July soldiers of the Ukrainian army who are stationed in Chernivtsi came to help the participants of the international volunteer summer camp. They together cleaned a part of the old Jewish cemetery in Zelena Street. On 3rd of July this year's summer camp of Action Reconciliation Service for Peace will start in Chernivtsi. As in the previous two years, this summer there will again be a summer camp of the German volunteering organisation Action Reconsilitation Service for Peace on the old Jewish cemetery in Zelena Street. The Museum for the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews supports the summer camp as a local partner. June 2011 From 23-30 June 2011 the second international youth summer school on Judaism will be held in Chernivtsi. It will be organised by the youth organisation "Youth association for religious studies" and its president Larissa Vladichenko. Co-organisers are the Chernivtsi Museum for History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews and the Chernivtsi Yuriy Fedkovytch University. May 2011 The exhibition "Motherland Word", dedicated to the 110th birthday of Rose Auslander. The Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews invites you to the exhibition "Motherland Word", dedicated to the 110th birthday of the world-renowned poet Rose Auslander, who was born in Chernivtsi. The opening of the exhibition will take place on the 19th of May 2011 at 3 pm in the entrance hall of the cinema "Chernivtsi" (former Jewish Temple). April 2011 Congratulations on Passover! It seems that not so long ago we together joyously celebrated the happy ending of the Megillat Esther story and the old Jewish tradition tells us about the coming of the next important holiday - Pesach. To celebrate this Holiday means not just to remember the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt, but also to think again about the meaning of inner and outer freedom as an essential part of human life. That is why at the eve of this Holiday we wish you and your family strength and patience, and fortitude to be free even in the face of difficult circumstances in life. March 2011 German TV star is interested in the Jewish past of Chernivtsi On Thursday, the 31st of March, the well-known German actress Iris Berben visited the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews. Iris Berben is one of the famous German actresses. She starred in about 80 roles in different films. The actress won numerous international and German awards. The important meeting in Lviv On the 23rd of March, representatives of the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews met a delegation of the Rothschild Foundation in Lviv. The meeting took place on the initiative of the Foundation in the process of evaluation of the project for the support of the museum's collection and the creation of our own Internet resource, which was realized in 2010. For this project the Rothschild Foundation awarded our museum with a grant. "Stairs of Tolerance" for Chernivtsi comprehensive schools. Recently the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews received good news from the Chernivtsi City Council: the commission of the contest of social projects, which is held in Chernivtsi every year, supported our museum's project "Stairs of Tolerance". Hence, in the autumn of 2011 regular workshop classes for senior pupils of Chernivtsi comprehensive schools will be held in our museum. These lessons aim at overcoming of the stereotypes and biases which exist among the young generation in their relation to other cultures and faiths. Trainings will be held by specialists based on methodology worked out with help of the Congress of National Communities of Ukraine. The International conference "Public reform of museum management and marketing". From the 14th to the 17th of March 2011, Mykola Kushnir, the director of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews, took part in the international conference "Public reform of museum management and marketing". This forum was organised in Kyiv by the International Renaissance Foundation, the Rinat Akhmetov Fund "Development of Ukraine" and the Ukrainian Centre for Museum Development. Film's director Boris Dratva visited the Museum On the 9th of March Borys Dratva, a former Chernivtsi resident and now a citizen of Israel, director of numerous documentary films about Chernivtsi and the life of Bukovinian Jews visited the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews. January 2011 International Holocaust Remembrance Day On the 27th of January the International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed in the entire world. The Holocaust was one of the worst crimes of World War II and one of the worst tragedies in the history of humanity and it should never happen again. Bukovina suffered heavily from the savage cruelty of the Holocaust. The victims of the inhuman policies which were carried out here mainly by the army and local administration of the Kingdom of Romania from July 1941 to March 1944 were nearly 100,000 local Jews. December 2010 Italian newspaper on the conference of the AEJM in Rome In the Italian newspaper "La Nostra Gazzetta" ("Our Newspaper"),) which is published in Russian, there was an article on the conference of the Association of European Jewish Museums, which recently took place in Rome. The Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews was represented by Joseph Zissels, the initiator of the museum's creation, and Natalia Shevchenko, the first director of the museum and now the curator of its collection. November 2010 Conference in Rome On 20 - 23 November 2010 the conference of the Association of European Jewish Museums (AEJM) took place in Rome. For the first time representatives of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews took part in the conference: Joseph Zissels, the initiator of the museum's creation, and Natalia Shevchenko, the first director of the museum and now the curator of its collection. This is an annual conference which has the aim to promote the cooperation between Jewish museums of Europe, to exchange thoughts and experiences in the field of museology as for today the museums in more than 30 countries of Europe are associate members of the AEJM. October 2010 Lesson on tolerance at the museum On the 30th of October the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews was visited by the participants of the School for Young Leaders "Steps towards each other". The editor of the newspaper "Den" got to know the museum Larysa Ivshyna, the editor in chief of the nationwide popular newspaper "Den" visited the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews on the 28th of October. Ukrainian-Jewish meeting in Jerusalem On 18 - 20 October 2010 the scientific conference "Ukrainian Jewish Encounter: Cultural Interaction, Representation, and Memory" was held in Jerusalem (Israel). The conference was organised by the "Ukrainian Jewish Encounter Initiative" in co-operation with the Israel Museum and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Scientists and public figures from Ukraine, Israel, the USA, Canada, Poland, Russia and France participated in the conference. Leonid Finberg from Kiev gave a talk about Jewish museums in Ukraine which was received with great interest. He paid special attention to the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews. Visit from Haifa At the beginning of October the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews was visited by Julia Shtraim, Deputy Mayor of Haifa (Israel) and Chairwoman of the Immigration Absorption Authority in Haifa. September 2010 Secret Service declassified the criminal case against Rosa Auslander Recently the funds of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews have been enriched by unique documents - materials of the criminal case against Beatrice Rosalia Scherzer, a famous poet of Jewish origin, who is known to the world as Rosa Auslander. Meeting of the Civil Counseling Board on Cultural Heritage Protection M.Kushnir, Director of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews together with N.Shevchenko, Deputy Director of the museum, attended a meeting of the Civil Counseling Board on Cultural Heritage Protection in Chernivtsi city on the 14th of September. The reconstruction of the former Jewish hospital's building in Barbusse Street (the former Synagogengasse) was one of the most discussed issues. Enrichment of our video-collection Recently the video-collection of the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews has been enriched by a new object - the film collection "It all began in Poland" ("Zaczelo sie w Polsce"). It was kindly given to the museum by Polish colleagues of the organization Filmoteka Narodowa. These documentary films, which include "Warsaw Sunday", "Siege" and others, are dedicated to the events on the eve and in the first days of World War II. Heorhiy Halyts visited our museum Heorhiy Halyts, the deputy chairman of the Chernivtsi region state administration visited the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews on the 10th of September. He took a tour around the museum and congratulated the museum's co-workers on the Rosh-Hashana. The International Poetry Festival "Meridian Czernowitz", dedicated to Paul Celan's 90th birthday has ended. The Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews is among the partners of the Festival. On the 4th of September the guests of the festival visited our museum, got to know our exhibition and learned about the life of the Jewish community of Bukovina. The video installation "Temple" on the front of the cinema "Chernivtsi" was a part of the festival's program. August 2010 International volunteers' camp has finished its work The work at the Jewish cemetery in Zelena str. was the most important part of the volunteers' activity. Though volunteers didn't aim to clean the entire cemetery, which area is approximately 15 hectares, their symbolic work is noticeable at once. July 2010 International volunteers' camp started its work on the 26th of July in Chernivtsi The second international summer volunteers' camp of the German organization Aktion Sü hnezeichen Friedensdienste (Action Reconciliation Service for Peace) started its work on the 26th of July in Chernivtsi in partnership and organizational support of the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews. The camp's program consists of work at the Chernivtsi's Jewish cemetery in Zelena Street, and also acquaintance with the history and multinational cultural heritage of Bukovina and its center Chernivsti. Scientific-practical seminar "Remembering the Forgotten: Jews in Poland and Ukraine" The scientific-practical seminar "Remembering the Forgotten: Jews in Poland and Ukraine" was held by the Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews on the 13th of July 2010. The seminar aimed to discuss problems of the preservation and restoration of historical memory as well as of the spiritual-cultural heritage of Jews in Poland and Ukraine. It was held in cooperation of the Museum with partner institutions in Warsaw. The mutual realization of the international project "Discourse of internal and external memory of Hasidic culture in Bukovina" became the reason for gathering. March 2010 Administrative Appointments Mykola Kushnir, historian, lecturer at the Chernivtsi National University, and author of numerous works on the history of the Jews of Bukovina became the new director of the Museum. Nataliya Shevchenko, the first director of the Museum, will continue to work on enrichment of the museum's exhibition and the scientific development of the museum's collection. She will be in charge of the museum's collection. February 2010 Booklet and map The booklet of the Museum (texts by Mykhail Gold, illustrations by Viktor Hukailo) and the schematic map "The Jewish Chernivtsi. Unforgotten image" (by Galina Kharaz) were recently published. These editions will help the museum's visitors and everyone, who is interested in the topic, to get to know the conception and the exhibition of the museum, and to learn more about the history of the Jewish Community of Chernivtsi. January 2010 Grant for the museum's development The museum has received a grant from the Rothschild Foundation (Europe) for the development of Jewish museums (Europe). This Foundation is known for its support of existing museums, which have proved their scientific and cultural value. That is why this grant means not only financial support, which is necessary for the museum's functioning and development, but it is also evidence of acknowledgment of our museum's success in the first year of its functioning. October 2008 Official opening of the museum On the 7th of October 2008 the official opening ceremony of the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews took place. This coincided with the 600th anniversary of the first written reference to the city of Chernivtsi. Even on the background of many wonderful events, which were held in the city, the opening of the museum was a significant event. The Chernivtsi press wrote about it and a lot of informational messages on the web were dedicated to this event. Among the guests of the celebration were former Chernivtsi citizens, who now live all over the world. Joseph Zissels, the Chairman of the Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities (VAAD) of Ukraine is the initiator of the museum's creation. Nataliya Shevchenko became the Museum's Director. The 100th Anniversary International Yiddish Language Conference The historical conference on the Yiddish language was held in Chernivtsi in August 1908. It was a significant event in the life of the Jews all over the world, giving an impulse for the development of Jewish national and cultural self-identification in the 20th century. Precisely 100 years later, in August 2008, a new, Anniversary Yiddish Conference took place in Chernivtsi. Its goal was to create awareness of the historical fate of Yiddish and the tragedy of the murder of the Yiddish-speaking people. And, despite of everything, one of the conference's goals was to understand the perspectives of the preservation of Yiddish and its development. An unofficial opening of the Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews was dedicated to the anniversary conference. The participants and the guests of the conference were the first visitors of the museum, where special display boards on the conference of 1908 were prepared. | |
